Bronx Zoo Baby Giraffe

A bouncing baby giraffe has made her debut at the Bronx Zoo.

The still unnamed calf was born in March, weighing in at about 100 pounds and standing 6 feet tall. As an adult, she could grow to 16 feet and weigh 2,600 pounds.

The Baringo giraffe calf is the latest addition to the zoo’s African Plains exhibit.

Giraffes are native to grasslands, savannas, and open woodlands in central, east, and southern Africa. The Baringo giraffe is found in western Kenya and eastern Uganda.

The giraffe populations are robust in many places, but the global population is decreasing.

While the new giraffe calf has not yet been named, the Bronx Zoo names all of its giraffes in memory of zoo benefactors James Carter and his wife.
